Dayak Finial
Dayak people, Borneo
17th century / mid-19th century
Bronze or copper
H: 5.25 in :: 13.3 cm
Very old Dayak shrines and gong chains sometimes have additional figurative castings attached as protective charms. As with some old bronzes the exact function of this unique piece is unknown. Central to its theme is a mythical hero riding, taming, and exchanging spiritual energy with two serpentine dragons (Ngabau in Iban) that most likely refer to an important story or legend.
