With the peaceful gaze of meditation, the Buddha’s proper right hand is in the mudra, ‘touching the ground,’ calling the earth to witness his enlightenment. The left hand is placed in the 'resting gesture of meditation'. Above his head rests, Mucalinda, the sacred naga, who protected Gautama from the elements after his enlightenment. Below sit 8 Buddhas in meditation.
