This panel features a complex array of protective aso or dragon-like mythological creatures. Such designs were intended to repel sickness and to protect a child by warding off malevolent spirits. Most often, these panels were attached to the outer portion of an aristocrat's baby carrier. It is a particularly fine example of the genre.
