Ceremonial Platter
Lake Sentani, Northwest New Guinea
Early 20th century
Wood
24.25 in :: 61.6 cm
A rare wooden ceremonial platter or dish from Lake Sentani, northwest New Guinea. The art of lake Sentani has been celebrated by collectors ever since the 1920-30's, when it first created a stir in Paris. It particularly inspired the Surrealist movement, who found the dream-like imagery, as is found on the reverse of this piece, akin to their own search to free themselves from more mundane forms.
