Late 19th/early 20th century
H: 4.25 in :: 10.79 cm
Known as Karubai, these stylistically carved figures served a double purpose. They were used as stoppers for bamboo tubes containing medicinal substances. Also, these figures were bound together and used by the shaman in healing ceremonies. The thick sometimes layered surface is the result of offerings that used eggs and sacrificial animal blood.
